You are correct. "Virtuality is now a virtue".

Times have changed. Communications media now extends into the virtual world and so should our our outreach. It already does through this blog for example. Horticulture needs a voice for its ideals as much as a political party does.

Horticulture is not rooted along the Potomac. (Maybe River Farm should be a separate entity - a true botanical garden funded by those who benefit from it or want it enough to pay for it - and then simply rent facilities to AHS?)

We have to adapt our message to deliver it in new media or we won't be heard. If we are not heard we might as well not exist. The future of horticulture is in the hearts and minds of those who might never know we exist. The dues-paying membership benchmark is a real indicator of effectiveness. The commercial horticulture industry has grown dramatically during the same years AHS membership has declined so much. Do not hide from those numbers - address them.

"When the ship does not reach the harbor, it is rarely the fault of the harbor."

Hi,
I popped onto your blog when I saw you in the new member list on Blotanical. All I can say is THANK YOU for your inside disclosure of the AHS. Just like all the gardening magazines available to be purchased they are just so out of touch with the variable climates and reality. Pardon my ignorance, but I thought I heard that Heronswood went out of business. Perhaps it was hearsay I recall from when I was still in the mail order nursery business myself a few years ago. Whatever the reality is, I wanted to say I appreciate your candid views and postings about the realities of the "accredited" sources of ornamental gardening in the USA as well as your realistic insight into the housing dream versus the warmth of a family home. I don't profess to like Martha, but if she is doing something to amend what is found to be the sought after place to live, then maybe there is a place for her in normal living after all.
