What is magical journalism? Never heard of it and most of my life has been spent as a journalist - editor-type, that is. I find that I tend to be alergic to food that isn't good for me. We ought to mount a campaign to cut down on the king-sized portions served in restaurants, ie JW Marriott's in DC where the prices are pricey and the servings are tremendous making me feel both guilty for not cleaning the plate and angry for wasting money. By the way, was Mary Ball one of your ancestors? DAR has a chapter honoring her up in Washington state, I learned the other day. I thought there was a Ball in the Revolutionary War. She figured in it, I understand. Ann Garlick.

And we live in a sedintary land, nowadays even from childhood on. When a car chase video game has replaced a serious bike chase through the side streets and alleys, a kid's metabolism's got to be harmed. When a NFA video game has replaced some split lips and torn shirts in welt-raising "touch" football--what can you expect but a bunch of fatties?

It use to be only in America did we have poor people who are fat. Now it's spreading to other countries who have seen an uptick in their "prosperity". Other countries where people who are poor, but emaciated must look at us in wonder, "In America, even when your poor you eat like a king." Even Gout, a disease from the past is making a comeback.

The bottom line is we eat too much. I am less inclined to blame a food group or condiment for our obesity. It's just we are in the land of plenty, and when there is plenty to eat we do.
