2010 Already! Part One
“What a difference a decade makes….87,600 little hours…”
Imagine—only ten years ago we bought Heronswood Nursery. And here we are, trucking to please, much the same as ever, if not more so. True, the catalogue size is smaller and instead of relying solely on descriptive copy, we now provide pictures as well, having started in 2004. The “unusually great plants”, always a mainstay of the company since it was founded in 1989, remain the focus. We still support our customers mainly by mail order catalogue and now, to a greater extent, by the internet. Yet the Heronswood experience will always be the “wow” of each year’s harvest of collected plants to share with you, our cherished customer.
So, here are ten highlights of 2010, in the first of two blog posts.
- Callicarpa ‘Duet’ bursts forth a lush fountain of variegated cream and green leaves.
- Chrysanthemum ‘Will’s Wonderful’ dazzles the fall gardener with thousands miniature russet-red daises.
- Clematis X ‘Hendryetta’ produces one of the more compact shrubs you will ever see of this glorious plant, featuring highly fragrant and nodding bell-shaped rose flowers.
- Echinacea ‘Coral Reef’ adds vibrant coral-reds to tantalize visitors to the garden from midsummer to fall.
- Loropetalum chinensis rubrum ‘Zhuzhou Fuchsia’ creates real magic by combining burgundy-black foliage and delicately fringed fuchsia blooms.
- Monarda didyma ‘Fireball’ impresses visitors with stunning globes of bold red all summer and well into fall. Big hit with bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.
- Primula ‘You and Me Cream’ delights everyone in the springtime garden with its joyful color combination and unique “hose-in-hose” form.
- Chaenomeles speciosa ‘Toyo-Nishiki’ delivers a flowering quince that features festive spring blooms and fruits to make delicious jams.
- Solidago ‘Dansolitlem’ Little Lemon™ provides you with an ultra-dwarf, free-flowering goldenrod for small spaces.
- Geranium X cantabrigiense ‘Biokovo’ produces a nice hat trick: Fragrance, neatness and durability in a groundcover.
