I love this article. Tom Cahill made me a fan of Patrick and all things Irish. I told him it was a very faith building book and he told me not to say that as most people did not see faith in the book.

The other thing is that to me no country has a faminewhich is as you said exporting food the whole time. The English landowners exported food and left the Irish to starve. This is perhaps the best telling of the Irish story since "How the IRish saved Civilazaion". you might find the rest of Cahill's series "the hinges of history" worth a read.

Great article. The potato dramatically changed European history. It allowed for huge population expansion in Germany, Russia- all across northern Europe, as well as in Ireland. Germany and Russia became major powers due to the potato

Thank you. You got it right. It was a disaster of epic proportions. Those who mock and distain the Irish do not know the horrors of that time and also the hundreds of years of servitude that led up to the Crop Failures. I did not know that the failures led to investigations into crop genetics. How wonderful.

The Irish Potato Famine also made a contribution beyond breeding new potatoes. It is one of the exceptions to the economic law of supply and demand; the fact that as price goes up, demand goes down. In the case of potatoes in Ireland as the price went down, the demand went down. The reason for this was potatoes consumed such a major portion of the diet. When the price of potatoes went down, the Irish farmers could afford other foods.
